Why Us

Why Working for Northwestern Mutual Might be Right for You?

Northwestern Mutual employees work in a business casual, dynamic atmosphere that encourages excellence, creativity and career advancement. More than just opportunities, we offer you challenges.

Northwestern Mutual's employees have a wide variety of educational backgrounds—from accounting to liberal arts to biology. A degree in one area does not necessarily lock you into that profession; we encourage our employees to expand their knowledge and their careers by moving across different areas of the Company. This benefits both employees as well as the Company. It gives our employees the freedom to explore different areas of interest to them, and gives the Company more experienced, well-rounded employees.

If you are wondering whether or not your degree is what we are looking for or qualifies you for a career in financial services, chances are—it is.

Northwestern Mutual recognizes that great ideas come from everyone. We encourage all employees to think creatively and share their ideas.

Northwestern Mutual's downtown Milwaukee and Franklin campuses include several cafeterias offering our employees both breakfast and lunch. Our Cyber Cafe offers coffee and soft drinks.

Taking Care of Business . . . and Family
Northwestern Mutual strives to help employees find balance between work and family. Part-time and alternative work schedules have been incorporated at the Company, and Flexible Spending Accounts allow employees the option of setting aside pre-tax dollars for expenses such as health care and dependent care. These are just some examples of how Northwestern Mutual encourages employees to find a healthy balance between work and personal life.

Work Hard—and Play Hard
At Northwestern Mutual, we work very hard. We also make sure that we play hard. With 30 activity clubs and social organizations, we offer plenty of opportunity for fun. No matter what your interests are, it's likely that we have something for you.

Community Events
Every day Northwestern Mutual’s employees inspire others in their work and personal lives – from helping people achieve their financial security goals, to dedicating their energy and enthusiasm to non-profit organizations.

Throughout the year, the Company sponsors a variety of social and community events.

United Way Campaign
Thanks to our employees' and retirees' generosity, and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation grant, Northwestern Mutual continues to be the leading corporate donor to the United Way of Greater Milwaukee. For the past three years, we've donated more than $3 million annually to the community campaign.

United Performing Arts Fund
Northwestern Mutual is proud to participate in the greater Milwaukee UPAF drive which provides the operating support for 37 arts groups and touches 1 million people through performances, educational outreach, special events and community partnerships.

Northwestern Mutual Day at the Brewers
Enjoy a day at the ballpark with fellow employees and cheer on Milwaukee's hometown favorites, the Milwaukee Brewers.

Charity Drives/Collections
On a monthly basis, employees donate items such as school supplies, food, coats, and sporting equipment for local groups in need.

Group Activities
Three to four times a month, groups of 25+ volunteers gather to lend their helping hands for an activity such as food sorts, respite care, building homes and helping at special events. From welcoming people at registration to helping with silent auctions, our volunteers are present from set up to clean up.

We offer employees several ways to be involved for a longer-term one-on-one commitment for youth through programs like Time to Read, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Junior Achievement, Literacy Services, and YMCA Sponsor-a-Scholar.

Walks, Runs, Rides
Annually, our employees participate in over 20 walks, runs or rides, including the Komen Race for the Cure. Northwestern Mutual Foundation provides t-shirts for employees, friends and family members as well as a grant to the organization for groups of 10 or more employees.

Our employees are our most valuable assets at Northwestern Mutual. The work they do and the innovation they provide keep us on top of the financial industry. Northwestern Mutual is committed to an employee benefit program that provides employees and retirees with a high level of financial security. To reach this goal, we provide a fiscally sound benefit program that protects employees and their immediate families in the case of illness or injury, in the case of the employee's death or disability or when the employee retires.

We recognize that a basic benefits package isn't enough. Employees expect more and Northwestern Mutual delivers. Our employees feel secure, protected by a strong network of benefits.

Working at Northwestern Mutual offers a highly competitive base pay and receive periodic salary reviews. In addition, most employees are eligible for "Variable Pay"—a performance-based bonus program.

Health Insurance
Northwestern Mutual employees select from a variety of medical, dental and vision plans through our MutualChoice medical program. These benefits are effective on the employee's first day of employment.

Flexible Spending Accounts are also available to home office employees. Flexible Spending Accounts allow employees to set aside pre-tax dollars for eligible health care expenses, such as deductibles, office visits, prescription co-payments, eyeglasses and contact lenses. Flexible Spending Accounts can also be created for dependent care expenses such as childcare costs, before- and after-school care, and elder care.

The question isn't whether to save for retirement, but how. Northwestern Mutual offers several means for its employees to prepare for the future.

401k Employee Savings Plan
From the first day of employment, all regular, full-time and part-time employees are eligible to participate in the 401k Employee Savings Plan. It is an excellent retirement and financial planning vehicle.

Employees may contribute 1-25% of their eligible compensation to the plan through payroll deduction. The Company then contributes an additional 50 cents per dollar up to the first 6% of an employee's contribution each pay period. Employees are fully vested in the Company contribution after completing one year of employment.

A number of investment options are offered to employees. The plan carries a loan provision and is governed by the Internal Revenue Service.

Northwestern Mutual understands the importance of financial security, which is why its pension plan is recognized as one of the best, offering a higher level of benefits than the plans of many other companies.

The pension plan is funded entirely through employer contributions, and all regular full-time and part-time employees are eligible. Pension benefits are dependent upon salary and years of service.

Community Involvement

Northwestern Mutual understands that its corporate responsibility extends beyond its employees and policyowners. We also have a responsibility to the community in which we live and work, to make it a better place, to make a difference. Northwestern Mutual has made a difference in the lives of thousands of people through its ambitious community involvement and volunteer programs.

With a longstanding tradition of leading corporate citizenship, Northwestern Mutual Foundation provides financial support for hundreds of non-profit organizations in the areas of Health and Human Services, Education and Arts and Culture, with a special emphasis on urban Milwaukee.

One way Northwestern Mutual lends support is through the Volunteer Support Program. This program recognizes and supports the volunteer efforts of our employees by providing cash grants to non-profit organizations to which employees and retirees volunteer. Administered by the Northwestern Mutual Foundation, these grants are above and beyond any financial contribution the Foundation may have already given to the same non-profit organizations.

Other programs and events in our home office also encourage employee participation, including a Matching Gifts Program, and annual fund-raising drives for the United Way and United Performing Arts Fund.

Our volunteer reach extends nationwide through the generosity and involvement of more than 7,800 Northwestern Mutual Financial Network Representatives.
