Eric Kala was halfway through college when the tragedy on September 11, 2001, struck. His devotion to serve his country drove him to leave school to enlist in the Air Force. As an avionics mission systems specialist, Eric spent four years working on bombers and cargo planes, keeping them ready to go whenever and wherever needed. He maintained and repaired radar and communications systems and flight controls, among other duties. When he left the Air Force, he went looking for a career in which he could find new ways of serving people.

Although I’ve only been a financial representative for four years, already three of my clients have had disability claims. Each one has called and said that because of me they bought something they never thought they would need – but now they need to know if they are going to be okay. It is incredibly gratifying to be able to say yes, to know that we did the groundwork together and now their families will be taken care of because of the financial protection they secured.
In addition to the fulfillment of helping people achieve financial security, I’ve experienced three great personal benefits in my career as a financial representative:
- I’m my own boss, making my own decisions and calling the shots.
- The income is great – there is a correlation between working hard and making a great living.
- I have the flexibility to spend more time with my family.
The military instilled in me the importance of integrity – the drive to “do the right thing.” When it came time to transition to civilian life, I knew I wanted to represent a company that values honesty and a greater commitment to its clients – something I didn’t see in other organizations. My advice to other veterans: If you bring the work ethic you had in the military to this career, there is no limit to the success you can achieve, both in having a significant impact on others’ lives as well as the financial reward, flexibility and satisfaction you can obtain as a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual.
