Northwestern Mutual was named one of Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For," the annual list of the nation's top companies based on employee satisfaction, company benefits and human resources practices. More than 1,000 firms were considered for this year's list. Northwestern Mutual ranked 66th.
"Offering our employees a top-notch work environment is a priority for Northwestern Mutual," says Susan Lueger, vice president of human resources. "Fortune's recognition shows our total rewards philosophy -- looking beyond pay and benefits to things like trust, respect and fairness -- is consistent with what employees expect of their employers today," adds Lueger.
Fortune's list is based on the annual study conducted by the Great Place to Work Institute, which surveyed a random sample of employees at the candidate companies. Two-thirds of the scoring is based on employee survey responses. The companies' HR policies and workplace culture were also evaluated.
Northwestern Mutual, the nation's largest direct provider of individual life insurance according to A. M. Best, has always received the highest possible ratings for financial strength from Standard & Poor's, Moody's, Fitch, and A. M. Best. In addition to life insurance, the company, its subsidiaries and affiliates are also providers of annuities, mutual funds, long-term care insurance and disability income insurance. These products and services are distributed through the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network and its 7,800 financial representatives. Among its affiliated companies are the Frank Russell Company, the investment management and advisory firm; Northwestern Mutual Investment Services, LLC (NMIS), the securities brokerage firm; and Northwestern Mutual Trust Company, a special purpose federal savings bank.
