Northwestern Mutual

Childhood Cancer Program

We see a future in which children and families can move beyond the fears of cancer and find happiness … because all kids deserve a chance to just be kids.

We’re working to accelerate the search for cures for childhood cancer and to provide support for families fighting the disease. Since 2012, our employees and financial representatives have spearheaded fundraising events nationwide – like lemonade stands, golf outings and run/walk events – to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research and support working with our nonprofit partners.

Meet some of the researchers Northwestern Mutual is funding

Through our partnership with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, we have funded over 130,000 hours of research to advance the work of childhood cancer researchers. Hear from researchers about the importance of funding to support their research, what they are investigating and their hope to make a difference in the lives of children fighting cancer.

To inspire bright minds in medicine, Northwestern Mutual Foundation has awarded grants to 18 Young Investigators projects, which are designed to fill the critical need for startup funds for less experienced researchers to pursue promising research. To help childhood cancer researchers meet and collaborate with others around the country, Northwestern Mutual sponsors a two-day Young Investigator Summit through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation each fall.

Northwestern Mutual Childhood Cancer Program

Northwestern Mutual has also funded research exploring cutting-edge alternatives to chemotherapy and radiation by triggering the body’s own immune system to fight cancer. We are also supporting work to better understand disparities in response to treatment or access to care.

Easing the burden for families

To lessen expenses for families who travel for treatment, we contribute to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s Travel for Care Fund, ensuring that families can reach critical treatments.

We recognize the important role that Child Life Specialists and distraction therapy play in helping children and families cope with childhood cancer. Therefore, we fund a child life specialist and a recreation therapist at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin. Our offices around the country also support organizations in their own communities that provide housing for families, send kids to camp or provide comfort kits for those diagnosed with cancer.
