Northwestern Mutual

Childhood Cancer Program

We see a future where children and families move beyond the fears of cancer and find happiness.

Childhood Cancer Program Brooke and Mom

We dream of a day when children and their families won’t face the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis. We’re working to accelerate the search for cures for childhood cancer and provide support for families fighting the disease. Since 2012, we’ve made great strides in raising awareness and raising funds for the cause through our nonprofit partners—Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and other family support nonprofits across the country.

What connects the 127th Rose Parade®, ballet and the fight against childhood cancer?

Thirteen-year-old Peyton Richardson doesn’t let the fight against leukemia stop her from thinking big. Her greatest adventure is the opportunity to see performances of the great ballet companies of the world and to study with their principal dancers.

“Find Your Adventure” was the theme of the 2016 Rose Parade presented by Honda. As the presenting sponsor of the 2016 Rose Bowl Game®, Northwestern Mutual’s parade float promoted its philanthropic effort to fight childhood cancer by featuring Peyton’s adventure.

Childhood Cancer

Our employees and financial representatives have spearheaded fundraising events nationwide-like lemonade stands, golf outings and run/walk events-to raise awareness and funds for childhood cancer research and support.

Funding a healthier future

We’re raising hope for a cure by funding critical research where it’s needed most. Through our partnership with Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, we have funded close to 65,000 hours of research to advance the work of childhood cancer researchers.

Childhood Cancer Program

To inspire bright minds in medicine, Northwestern Mutual Foundation awarded $1.2 million in research grants for eight specific childhood cancer research projects focused on causes and cures. The awards support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation’s (ALSF) Young Investigators projects, which are designed to fill the critical need for startup funds for less experienced researchers to pursue promising research. To help childhood cancer researchers meet and collaborate with others around the country, Northwestern Mutual sponsors a two-day Young Investigator Summit through Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation each fall.

Easing the burden for families

To lessen expenses for families who travel for treatment, we contribute to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation Family Travel Fund, ensuring that families can reach critical treatments.

We recognize the important role that Child Life Specialists play in helping children and families cope with childhood cancer. Therefore, we are providing 5 years of funding at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin to support families.  We also sponsored distraction therapy through the Starlight Children’s Foundation, helping families enjoy time together during treatment.
