  • John E. Schlifske
    Chairman and Chief Executive Officer

    John E. Schlifske is chairman and chief executive officer of Northwestern Mutual and a member of the company’s Board of Trustees. After joining Northwestern Mutual in 1987 as an investment specialist, Schlifske moved from portfolio manager to senior executive overseeing a variety of the company's investment operations. He later headed different parts of the company’s business operations.

  • Gregory C. Oberland
    President

    As president of Northwestern Mutual leading the Career Distribution, Sales and Marketing function, Gregory C. Oberland is responsible for the company’s strategy of growing and enhancing its field force and delivering financial security to clients. Oberland joined Northwestern Mutual in 1982 as an attorney. He has held numerous executive-level positions with increasing responsibility for a variety of product line and operational areas, including disability income, life underwriting, policyowner services and information systems.

  • Michael G. Carter
    Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer

    As executive vice president and chief financial officer, Michael G. Carter is responsible for the company’s financial management functions, strategic planning and enterprise risk management oversight. Carter joined Northwestern Mutual’s law department in 1994 and went on to serve in a number of executive leadership roles in operations, planning and distribution. Since 2008, he has served as the company’s chief financial officer. Prior to joining the company, he was an attorney with Quarles & Brady in Milwaukee.

  • Joann M. Eisenhart
    Senior Vice President – Human Resources

    As senior vice president – human resources, Joann M. Eisenhart leads the People Function, which includes human resources, campus & event experiences, and strategic philanthropy & community relations departments. Prior to joining Northwestern Mutual in 2011, Eisenhart was senior vice president of Human Resources at Pfizer, Inc., where she led a global human resources team that supported more than 100,000 employees worldwide.

  • John M. Grogan
    Senior Vice President – Insurance Products and Client Services

    As senior vice president – insurance products and client services, John M. Grogan is responsible for the overall strategy and performance of the company’s insurance businesses, and for support and servicing of Northwestern’s insurance and investment clients. This includes overall leadership responsibility for the Life, Disability, Long-Term Care and Annuity product lines, and for the transformation of the client service experience through the New Business, Insurance and Annuity Client Services, Policy Benefits, Risk Selection Strategy, and Product Services departments. Grogan joined Northwestern Mutual as an attorney in 1992. He has a broad background as a company attorney, as well as having agencies and product experience, including leading the Field Services and Support and Disability Income departments. He also served as chief executive officer of the Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company during the financial crisis.

  • Ronald P. Joelson
    Executive Vice President and Chief Investment Officer

    As executive vice president and chief investment officer, Ronald. P. Joelson oversees management of the company’s more than $200 billion general account investment portfolio, which supports the company’s surplus and its insurance and annuity products. Joelson is responsible for the company’s four investment departments: Public Investments, Northwestern Mutual Capital, Northwestern Mutual Real Estate and Investment Strategy. Prior to joining Northwestern Mutual, he served as chief investment officer of two global insurance companies: Genworth Financial and Prudential Financial.

  • Raymond J. Manista
    Senior Vice President – General Counsel and Secretary

    As senior vice president – general counsel and secretary, Raymond J. Manista is responsible for the company’s law and public affairs function, including the law, communications, enterprise compliance, and government relations departments. Manista has held various leadership roles since joining Northwestern Mutual in 1998, including vice president - corporate planning, and vice president – Litigation Counsel. Prior to joining the company, he was a shareholder at Godfrey & Kahn, S.C., in Milwaukee, where he practiced commercial litigation.

  • Timothy G. Schaefer
    Executive Vice President – Client and Digital Experience

    As executive vice president – client and digital experience, Timothy G. Schaefer is responsible for Northwestern Mutual's overall client experience, digital strategy and technology. Since joining Northwestern Mutual in 1988 as a programmer in the information systems department, Schaefer has held several leadership roles in policyowner services, life benefits and information systems, including the role as chief information officer and executive vice president of operations and technology.
