From family therapist to a financial advisor, James O’Hara knew from the beginning this was where he wanted to be.
Making the Career Change
I made the choice to change careers in order to provide a better lifestyle for my family. I was directed to Northwestern Mutual on the advice of a good friend of mine who was familiar with the financial services industry.
Once I had met Mike McKeever and gone through the interview process with Northwestern Mutual, I knew that this was the place I wanted to be.
I appreciate that I get the opportunity to participate in important work. My clients have the comfort of knowing that they have prepared for many of life’s scenarios. For this I am well compensated, and I don’t have to worry about not having a job tomorrow.
Since beginning with Northwestern Mutual, I’ve learned I am capable of more than I ever thought I could do. Referrals, for sure, present the biggest challenge of this career. It is too much like asking for help, but it’s the nature of the business, and I have to “just do it.”
During my first few years as a financial representative, the biggest challenge I faced was conviction − being more certain that clients needed my guidance and our products more than they didn’t need me or our products.
This is a wonderful career. The work is important work, and it never gets dull. We always try to do what is right for the client. In a world where often people have little faith in corporate America, Northwestern Mutual stands out as an example of how things should be done.
Be prepared to work harder than you ever have in your life. Don’t give up. This career makes you become better at what you least like to do. In the end the potential is there for both personal growth and a lucrative career.
Making a Difference
Currently I have a client who was diagnosed with ALS. This is a terminal disease; and when we first met, it was clear that we needed to develop a plan he was comfortable with. I’m fortunate to be able to work with individuals and help them put plans in place to continue to support their families even when they are gone.
