As a stockbroker for a hedge fund, Jessica Salazar was bringing in a good income but wasn’t satisfied with her career path. She wanted to make a bigger impact through her work and to grow personally and professionally. Since joining Northwestern Mutual in March of 2005, Jessica has enjoyed a rewarding career with remarkable leadership opportunities. She is currently a wealth management advisor and managing director of the Virginia Beach office.
In Her Own Words
"Being a leader has helped me better serve my clients. In order to teach and coach others, I had to develop a deep understanding of every aspect of this business. I use that knowledge to help my clients achieve their goals."
Making a Difference
This career offers endless opportunities and the chance to make a real difference in the world. I help people find a way to enjoy more possibilities in life and to gain peace of mind knowing their family is protected.
As part of my work, I help clients see the “big picture.” Often, people have financial products but not a comprehensive plan for financial security. I make sure all the pieces are present and working together.
A mentor once told me that he is always confident in the financial recommendations he makes because Northwestern Mutual always strives to put the needs of clients first. I sleep well at night knowing that all recommendations I make are in the best interests of the people I serve.
My goal is to be a pathfinder for other women in the financial industry. At Northwestern Mutual, I’ve been able to enjoy a successful career, get on the leadership path and move up very quickly. The possibilities for women in this career are limitless. If you work hard and push through, you can succeed.
I enjoy running my own business. It gives me the opportunity to control what I achieve and to determine my own worth in earnings. Because I manage my own time, I also have the flexibility to set priorities. When my son was diagnosed with cancer in 2013, I was able to take the time I needed to be with him without wondering whether or not I would have a job when I returned.
In the beginning, it was a challenge to build a client base because I did not have a huge network to draw from, but I kept at it. I was determined to succeed and to make my family proud. Being active in my community helped me network, develop relationships and grow my business.
What you put into this career determines what you get out of it. You’ll need to commit to a lot of hard work when you start out. Network, make contacts and start developing a clientele. The more people you reach out to, the more people you can help.
It’s also important to manage your time wisely, to hire staff early on and to learn from other representatives. Above all, strive to do the right thing and to be the best you can be. Your work is important: You are helping people fulfill their goals and dreams.
