    Basic Function: The Lean Improvement Coach delivers and leads process improvement efforts across multiple operational teams at Northwestern Mutual.  The focus of these improvement efforts is to eliminate non-value-added activities to improve the customer experience, engage employees in improving their work, and achieve improvement goals for the organization.  The Lean Improvement Coach will aid with Value Stream Analysis activities, lead Rapid Improvement (i.e. Kaizen) Events, map and document workflows, observe and time work tasks, capture and analyze metrics, and perform additional analysis and facilitation to achieve objectives.  The Lean Improvement Coach will influence, coach, and mentor individuals at various levels in the organization to achieve results and promote and sustain the transformation to a process improvement culture. 

    Qualifications: Minimum of 6 years of work experience, including 4 years of process improvement experience.   Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.   Minimum Lean or Six Sigma Green Belt Certification or equivalent experience; with Black Belt certification desired.  Demonstrated independent command of lean process improvement efforts with proven data and process analysis skills.   Demonstrated experience delivering sustainable results and managing in a lead role on process improvement efforts.  Prior leadership experience to coach, mentor, and empower others, including training less experienced staff on process improvement tools and techniques.  Ability to effectively communicate and influence at various levels of the organization (from staff to upper management) to increase engagement and understanding of Business Process Improvement processes, goals, and benefits.   Experience in designing and implementing roll out efforts and authoring and publishing quality technical documentation (in disciplines including but not limited to process improvement) to ensure sustainability of the Business Process Improvement program and individual efforts.

  • Lead Project/Outcome Manager- Innovation

    Description:

    BASIC FUNCTION:

    As Lead Project/Outcome Manager in Innovation, you will lead efforts to test and validate business model hypotheses of new ideas or products introduced through the Northwestern Mutual digital innovation practice.  At any given time, you will be responsible for leading multiple projects and effectively communicating to team members and stakeholders. Through the use of Design Thinking and/or Lean Startup principles you will be required to design, develop and run experiments that validate or invalidate the hypothesized business value.  Accountable for facilitating, managing, and building awareness around each innovation experiment.  Responsible for delivering post project recommendations based on tested hypotheses. You will define and manage scope, schedule, cost, and quality.

    Specific responsibilities include: Understanding current & emerging technology analyzing them to link emerging technology to financial services business models, designing business model hypotheses and experiments through design thinking principles; Exceptional communication with all audiences both written and oral, vendor procurement and management activities. Above all, you will be required to embrace an entrepreneurial environment turning the ambiguous into reality.  With an entrepreneurial mindset you will be able to make pivots readily as you learn from customer interviews; you take ownership of matters, moving between diverse tasks with cooperation and persistence to motivate and bring out the best in those around you.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Entrepreneurship, Computer Science, Information Systems or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and work experience
    • Seven or more years of project/outcome management experience with at least two years’ experience in an entrepreneurial role
    • Experience facilitating design thinking or customer development workshops in order to design and test business model hypotheses
    • Experience managing SDLC (systems development life cycle) and how feedback from customers impacts feature sets or product direction preferred
    • Experience in aligning projects to corporate strategies
    • Experience with vendor relationship management and/or contract creation
    • Ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization
    • Good communication skills, ability to multi-task, and tolerance for failure are required.
    • Proven ability to influence and persuade team members, stakeholders and vendor
    • Proven skills in storytelling and articulating the “why”
    • Insurance Operations/Fin. Services Sales experience a plus
    • IT architecture experience a plus
