In His Own Words
Making a Difference
Service is part of my heritage. My father was in the military, as was my grandfather, and I was proud to follow this honored tradition. It has always been important for me to be part of a cause that’s bigger than myself.
I believe my career as a financial representative is a natural outgrowth of my military service. It empowers me to continue helping others, but on a more personal level. It’s rewarding to know I can make a real impact on clients’ lives by helping them plan for a strong financial future. Whether they’re focused on building a business, saving for a child’s education or protecting their family, I can help them achieve their goals.
As a field director at Northwestern Mutual, I also have an opportunity to lead by example – sharing my experiences and insights with others. Today, I mentor seven to twelve representatives at any given time. My leadership experience in the military provided a great foundation for supervising and coaching others.
I enjoy building meaningful relationships with people and helping them create a financial plan designed to provide the security they need, regardless of what the future holds.
Recently, one of my younger clients lost a close friend. She wrote to tell me that during this time of loss, the importance of planning for the unforeseen really hit home. She said, “We’re sleeping a lot better at night knowing our financial future is safe. We’re thankful for all the work you’ve done planning for our family.”
My career also gives me many opportunities to make a difference in the community. I’m proud to give back by supporting important causes like Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation and the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which both help in the fight against childhood cancer. This work has deep, personal meaning to me.
My biggest career challenge has been overcoming personal and mental obstacles. When I started out, I didn’t have a corporate background or business experience, so self-doubt sometimes crept in. With extensive training and support from Northwestern Mutual leaders and mentors, I was able to develop my skills, pinpoint my career direction, focus my vision and find my purpose.
In the military, there’s a very structured and systematic approach to your role. This is great training for a career as a financial representative. To be successful, you have to be disciplined and keep structure in your daily habits. You have to put your boots on and do the hard work.
Having a solid support system is also important. As you embark on your career, try to find a company with the education, development and mentorship you need, and make sure the company’s mission aligns with your values.
Northwestern Mutual understands military veterans and can guide you through each step of your career. You’ll have the support and assistance you need to develop into a successful representative.
