Northwestern Mutual

John Byczek

Learn how Northwestern Mutual helped John hold onto his financial representative position after being deployed as a reservist following 9/11.

John Byczek

John Byczek enlisted in the Army in 1982 and spent 16 years in a variety of roles – serving as an infantryman to a paratrooper to an intelligence officer. Upon leaving the Army, John pursued two tracks: He continued to serve in the Reserves and searched for a new career where he could continue to make a difference in people’s lives. That drive led to him becoming a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual.

In His Own Words

Making a Difference

I work with all kinds of people at all levels of income – from individuals making $40,000 a year who need to figure out how they will achieve future financial security to extremely wealthy people who, while they may already be financially secure, are looking for guidance to help ensure they remain protected later in life. The core of what I do is help people. It’s what drives me every day, and it’s a good feeling to know that I’m making a difference in people’s lives.

Career Rewards/Challenges

The September 11 attacks occurred just after my third anniversary with Northwestern Mutual. Shortly afterward, I got called up to the Reserves to serve in Afghanistan. While I was honored to serve, it was an obvious disruption in my current career as a financial representative. But Northwestern Mutual stood by me throughout my deployment. They helped keep my practice up and running and even awarded bonuses prorated from results of the year prior to my deployment.

This career requires a lot of self-motivation and discipline. For some, it can be very lonely. There are a lot of people who can serve as mentors, but at the end of the day, the opportunity is what you make of it. You have a lot of independence, which is one of the drivers of the career. One needs to work hard to be successful, but for someone with discipline and drive, this career can be a great fit.

Career Advice

The military instills discipline and teamwork. If you enlist, everyone starts at the bottom. That’s the same model at Northwestern Mutual. You’re all equals at the start of your careers, and all receive the same training, education and mentoring designed to build up your skills. You start as a financial representative, and from there you choose your own path – for example, pursuing additional training and credentials. Northwestern Mutual is there every step of the way to help you get started – providing hands-on learning to put you on the path to having a successful career. If you are open to being coached, you can do this job.
