Why the Rose Bowl Game Is Never on a Sunday

October 24, 2016 | Rose Bowl 2017

For many, it’s tradition to spend New Year’s Day watching the Rose Bowl Game®. But sometimes that can’t happen, for example this year’s 2017 Rose Bowl Game is actually taking place on January 2nd. Why? For the horses. We’re serious, it’s for the horses.

Since 1893, the tournament has moved the game to January 2nd if it fell on a Sunday to avoid frightening horses that would have been hitched outside of churches. The fear is that the horses would have been spooked, interrupting worship services.

Although it’s been quite some time since someone rode their horse to church in Pasadena, the Rose Bowl Game has keep this tradition in place.
