Rick Thurman
Financial Representative|MBA
Professional
Rick began his career as an Engineer with Texas Eastern Gas Pipeline (TEGP). After several years with TEGP and having completed his MBA, he joined Coopers & Lybrand (now PWC) to create a business development group. His career continued with management roles in Marketing and Sales at Continental Airlines, Knight Ridder and Dow Jones.
Prior to joining Northwestern Mutual (NM) in 2002, Rick taught money management techniques such as debt reduction/elimination, budgeting and wealth accumulation through a stewardship perspective. He decided to combine his hobby and experience into a career where he could make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Northwestern Mutual afforded him this opportunity, and it's been very gratifying for him to see so many of his clients address incredibly important issues that otherwise might have been overlooked. Currently, his primary focus is helping clients plan for and enter into a care-free retirement.
Education
Rick graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. He also received his MBA in Corporate Finance from the University of Houston. As an undergraduate and graduate student, he studied abroad in Italy.
He has continued his education by completing coursework at The American College. He received his CASL® designation in May 2010 and the ChFC® designation in November 2014.
Personal
Rick is a native of Houston. He has been married to his wife, Leannah, since 1990. They have three children: Olivia, Luke, and Joshua. He resides with his family in West Houston. In his spare time, he enjoys traveling (having been in 46 states), choral music, piano, woodworking, downhill skiing and mountaineering. He has stood on the highest elevation point in 25 states and summited several 14-ers in Colorado. Rick is active in his church and enjoys finding ways to make an impact in his community.
Lending a hand in my community.
As part of Northwestern Mutual, I'm proud to help accelerate the search for better childhood cancer treatments while supporting families undergoing treatment, and survivors from late effects. Here are some of the organizations we partner with:
Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for Childhood Cancer (ALSF)
ALSF funds cancer research, raises awareness, and supports the families of children with cancer. Since 2012, Northwestern Mutual, its employees, and financial professionals like me have donated more than $20 million to support ALSF and fund over 400,000 research hours.

Beads of Courage
Beads of Courage is an art-in-medicine program that helps kids with cancer tell their unique treatment story through colorful beads that are symbols of their courage.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation
Rick and his family participate in the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Walk to Cure. Each year, JDRF One Walk™ brings together more than 900,000 people to change the future of type 1 diabetes (T1D). At more than 200 walks nationwide, people from all walks of life come together to form one united community – a community committed to the JDRF mission, and determined to remove the burden of this disease from the lives of those they care about most. Because of their support, JDRF One Walk has raised more than $1 billion for life-changing T1D research since 1992.

How Northwestern Mutual helps you live the life you want.
When people feel better about their money, good things happen—they become more confident and feel more secure. For more than 160 years, Northwestern Mutual has helped people achieve the financial flexibility they need to live more and worry less.
Being a mutual company means Northwestern Mutual reports to its clients, not Wall Street. They don't believe in chasing fads or taking undue risk for short-term gains. Instead, they take a long-term approach—both in the way we help people plan to reach their goals, and in the way they do business. This has served their clients (and mine) well through all kinds of economic ups and downs, including wars, recessions, even the recent pandemic.
It's why I'm happy to be part of a company that's in it for the long-haul and prioritizes clients over profit.
