Tom Nicholson is taking his family on vacation every year during his retirement. He and his Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Advisor, Rebecca Bast, talk about how he’s making it happen.
Tom: I had decided that we as a family were going to take an annual vacation together. I said, “OK. So where are we going?”
My daughter, Kristen, said, “I want to go to Lima, Peru, to go to see Machu Picchu.” I said, “Oh, wow! Um, OK.”
I like to see places that I’ve not been before. I’m a real history buff. I do a lot of volunteer work. I love helping people, and I’ve been able to do that.
My introduction to Rebecca came at a real crossroads in my life.
Rebecca: He came in looking for an advisor. He was about to have an inheritance and he was getting ready to retire.
Tom: I needed to get my head around what I was going to do in terms of financial planning. Retirement can be a challenge. I think you need to be prepared to go into it with a plan.
Rebecca: He wasn't sure if he could comfortably retire. He didn't understand what Social Security would do for him and that he could take income from the life insurance policies that he had for all these years.
Tom: Rebecca actually hit on it [when] she said, “You know, Tom, I'd like you to think about developing some memories for yourself and maybe with your children.”
Rebecca: I just love the idea: Everybody put an ideal trip in a cup, and you pull one out; whichever one you pull out, that’s your trip.
Tom: There are just a few little simple ground rules. You can choose to go anywhere you want, but we have to be able to get to the location in one day. So I told Kristen Lima’s not going to work because we can’t do it in one day. She thought about it, and then she selected Maine. We just had a wonderful, wonderful vacation.
It has allowed us to create memories, memories that the kids will have when I’m no longer here. That’s just invaluable.
Rebecca: Today his goals are a little bit different, and this coming summer will be his third trip. And he doesn't have to worry about it because we’ve shown him where the money can come from and that it doesn't affect the plan.
Tom: It has allowed us to create memories, memories that the kids will have when I’m no longer here. That’s just invaluable.
