Where Is Long-Term Care Provided?

Understand your options for where you might receive long-term care services.

If you or a loved one needed care for an extended period of time, your family would no doubt drop everything to help. But is that what you’d really want?

Fortunately, you have options when it comes to long-term care planning that can help put you in control over how and where care is provided.

What Are Your Options?

It’s important to consider the options available to you for long-term care assistance.

  • Care in your home. You may be surprised to learn that most long-term care is provided at home, either by an unpaid caregiver, such as a family member or friend, or by a paid caregiver. Paid caregivers may include a nurse, home health or home care aide, and/or therapist who comes to the home daily or periodically.
  • Care in your community. Many families provide caregiving on a part-time basis and supplement that care with community-based services. These include adult day care centers, transportation services, and home care agencies that provide services on a daily basis or as needed.
  • Care in a facility. If remaining at home isn’t an option for whatever reason, there is a variety of facility-based programs, including assisted care facilities and nursing homes.

For many, a blended approach to these options makes the most sense. This continuum of care would allow you or your loved one to live independently for as long as possible, supplement home care with community services as needed, and then transition into facility care when remaining at home is no longer safe or desirable.
