Beyond the Championship: What the Milwaukee Brewers™ Teach Us About Legacy
Key takeaways
A championship run years in the making: The Milwaukee Brewers™—Northwestern Mutual’s official financial planning partner and jersey patch partner—are headed to the championship. Their success didn’t happen overnight; it reflects years of disciplined decisions, player development, and commitment to the long game.
Two Milwaukee institutions, one community: For more than 50 years, the Brewers™ have brought generations of fans together, and for nearly 170 years Northwestern Mutual has invested in and supported the Milwaukee community.
The Way We Win: The Brewers and Northwestern Mutual are both hometown teams who understand lasting success comes from a different approach to planning, involving sustained effort and disciplined decisions.
For the first time since 1982, the Milwaukee Brewers are headed to the championship—a milestone decades in the making. Generations of fans are celebrating a local team that does things their own way, resulting in something big.
The Brewers’ journey to the championship offers valuable lessons about building a legacy that lasts: One based on long-term vision, disciplined decisions, investing in people, and a deep commitment to community.
When a city becomes a community
In 2023, Northwestern Mutual became the official financial planning partner and first-ever jersey patch partner of the Milwaukee Brewers, evolving a partnership between two institutions deeply rooted and invested in the Milwaukee community. But the custom branded patch on player jerseys is more than a sponsorship. It represents two organizations with shared Milwaukee heritage and shared values.
Making big swings together
Together, the Brewers and the Northwestern Mutual Foundation continue to fundraise in support of Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF), with the goal of finding better treatments, health outcomes, and cures for childhood cancer. Under that partnership, every run batted in (RBI) hit by the team triggered a donation to fund five hours of childhood cancer research through ALSF. The team and Northwestern Mutual also welcomed children and families affected by childhood cancer over a weekend series in September as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness month, helping to raise over $237,000 for ALSF through RBI, 50/50 raffle proceeds, ticket sales, and concession stand round-up.
The Research Batted In initiative has generated nearly 11,000 hours of research funding since its inception.
That community focus is only one part of what connects us. The Brewers and Northwestern Mutual are both hometown teams who believe in a different way of planning that involves investing for the long haul, developing people, and building trust over time. Those shared values are why we’re proud to support the team on its championship journey.
Legacy is about more than what’s on the scoreboard
The Brewers legacy lives in about the moments Milwaukee families share: a parent taking a child to a first game, coworkers gathering in the stands, friends tailgating before the first pitch, and fans passing down favorite players, and traditions from one generation to the next. It also shows up in community investment, youth programs, and civic pride. That sense of connection reflects a value we share: building relationships that endure and make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people we serve.
The long game—why time is a legacy's greatest ally
No team wins it all in a single game. A championship takes years of smart moves, patient investment, and the discipline to balance today’s opportunities with tomorrow’s needs. The Brewers have made that long view visible in the way they scout, develop, and mentor talent through the organization, building a pipeline rather than relying on one season or one star.
That commitment continues after players leave the active roster. In July, Northwestern Mutual was the presenting partner of the 2026 Alumni Legends Game to celebrate the 25th anniversary of American Family FieldTM. Fan favorites returned to reconnect with the community and teammates and carry Brewers traditions forward. The event was a reminder that a strong organization develops people, sustains relationships, and creates reasons for them to stay connected, much like Northwestern Mutual’s approach to its employees, field advisors, and clients.
It’s the values that outlive you
A franchise's legacy lives in its people—the fans who pass down their love of the game, the coaches who mentor the next generation, and the players who make a season memorable.
Together with the community that keeps showing up season after season, they’re helping carry the Brewers legacy forward. It's not about any one individual, but the values they leave behind that outlast them, forming an organization with a shared belief in what really matters.
For these reasons and many more, we’re proud to stand behind the Milwaukee Brewers as they represent our hometown on baseball’s biggest stage. Go BrewersTM! Let’s keep winning together!
